Ryan Newman Earns Seventh-Place in Action-Packed Second Duel to Start 16th in the Daytona 500

"We kept the Caterpillar Chevrolet in one piece which was a challenge a couple of times. I think we realized tonight what we still need to work on without having competed in the Clash or had any practice. I'm pleased with the fact that we were able to drive from the back and into the top 10 in the final three laps. We had a better car than where we finished, probably a top-five contender. With that said, we still have some work to do in order to have a car capable of winning on Sunday." - Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman's Strong Run Ends After Getting Collected in an Accident During the Final Stage of the Daytona 500

"What happened to us is simply the product of restrictor-plate racing. After dodging one wreck and man, was it close, we got caught up in the very next one shortly after the restart around lap 140. I saw the No. 95 car get together with another car in front of me and I had no where to go. My Caterpillar pit crew did a great job fixing the right-front before the five minute clock expired to get us back out on the track and running in the top 10. Unfortunately, we had a tire rub and had to pit. That took us out of contention. I want to thank RCR for giving me a strong car and ECR Engines for the horsepower. We earned some championship points after finishing in the top 10 in the second stage. Now it's off to Atlanta Motor Speedway and I feel confident I'll have another strong Chevy." - Ryan Newman

Cutdown Tire Foils Ryan Newman's Top-10 Run at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

"We made some major improvements to the Caterpillar Chevrolet last night after running a simulation that showed a behavioral problem with a rear spring. As soon as the green flag dropped, we made up ground and just missed the top 10 at the conclusion of Stage 1 and from there on, we never raced outside the top 10 until our final pit stop. At that point it felt like something broke underneath the car, but we found out it was actually a tire that was slowly losing air throughout our run. We were fortunate that the caution came out, and we were able to pick up four spots in the end. Like last week, we had a fast car. We just need to stay focused and do everything we can to avoid issues." - Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman and the Grainger Team Break RCR's 112-Race Winless Streak With Gutsy Pit Strategy

"What a gutsy call by my crew chief Luke Lambert. I called for two tires and he called for none. I've won more races with no tires than I have with four. I'm just proud of these guys. We had a good car all day. We kept it out of trouble and collected in the end. I went into Turn 3 looking at my mirror. I knew Kyle Larson was down there, but it took my car forever to get going. I'm spent. I had the chills on lap 150. I'm done. This victory is just sweet for so many reasons. I've lost count of how many races it's been since the last time I've won-that's how long it's been. I've got to thank RCR and ECR, as well as our partners on the 31 including Grainger, Caterpillar, Coca-Cola, Chevrolet, and everyone else." - Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman Rebounds After Rough Race Start at Auto Club Speedway to Finish 15th

"It was a tough and long day for us in the Caterpillar Chevrolet at Auto Club Speedway. Unfortunately, we began the race on a negative note with a hole in the front nose on the first lap that cost us our track position. Then we battled an extremely tight-handling car that put us a lap down. We finally raced back onto the lead lap with 19 to go. It certainly wasn't the finish we wanted, especially considering where we practiced and qualified this Chevrolet, but it was a decent recovery." - Ryan Newman

"We never got the corner connected, entry, middle and exit all day long for our No. 31 Chevrolet. We just struggled a little bit. I'm surprised we finished as good as we did for how bad the car felt, but all in all, it was a good job for the guys. Matt Kenseth and I had a hell of a race for nothing, but that is sometimes what you've got to do. It was just fun racing at Martinsville Speedway all day long. A lot of single-file racing today. I think the other tire might have been better, but we will just keep digging." - Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman and the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet Team Earn 26th-Place Finish at Texas Motor Speedway

"Today was just not our day. This new track surface was definitely a challenge and it seemed like we never really got our car to where we wanted it to be. Luke (Lambert, crew chief) and the guys did all they could to try and fix the balance of our No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet, but it always seemed like we were just too tight. With the new configuration, Turns 3 and 4 were a struggle to get through without being super tight. I think we definitely learned something for when we come back here in the fall, but overall today was not the finish we wanted. We'll take the off weekend to reset and get ready for Bristol in two weeks." - Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman Battles Back From Speeding Penalty to Finish 14th in the No. 31 Grainger Chevrolet at Bristol Motor Speedway

"The speeding penalty is on me. I pushed it to get all I could and unfortunately, it bit us and we went from sixth to 17th. We gambled on the final stop and took two left-side tires with 50 to go to restart sixth. It didn't work out as well as we had hoped. We had a top-10 Grainger Chevrolet and despite our race, I'm happy to see the speed and handling potential is there. We had no idea what to expect with the addition of VHT on the lower portion of the track and I think we fared well considering." - Ryan Newman

"We ran a smart race in our Caterpillar Chevrolet. We led some laps in the second stage and were doing what we needed to do to put ourselves in contention at the end. On the second-to-the-last restart, I felt like they were going to wreck so I dropped back and sure enough, they did. We were fortunate on that one. I honestly thought we were going to be OK at the end but with four laps to go, I got into the wall pretty hard. It's Talladega. We did the best we could and it's all about staying out of trouble and we unfortunately got in it." - Ryan Newman

Mid-Race Engine Failure Spoils Strong Run for Ryan Newman and the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet SS

"The bottom end of the motor just broke. We finally got the Caterpillar Chevrolet running well, not to where we needed to be, but better from how we started the race. We knocked a hole in the grill from a spring rubber or something. I watched what I hit, but I couldn’t tell what it was. Finally got enough tape on it so it would run warm and stick a little bit better and made a whole bunch of changes to the car, but just something in the motor broke, bottom end for sure, but I’m not really sure what happened first." - Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman Cuts Down Right-Front Tire Costing Caterpillar/Grainger Team a Transfer Spot in Final Stage of the All-Star Race

"It was a mixed bag for us tonight in the Caterpillar/Grainger Chevrolet. In the first stage, I was making my way up through the field when I messed up a lap and it cost us a few spots. We needed to start making a move to the front in Stage 2 to help our chances of making it into the final stage 10-car shootout. We were once again moving up in Stage 3 and I thought we'd have a chance to make it in when we cut down a right-front tire with just a few laps to go. It ended our night. I hate it for this Caterpillar/Grainger Chevrolet team. I think we learned a few things tonight so I hope it will help us next week in the Coca-Cola 600." - Ryan Newman

It was just so tight. I had another car on my quarter-panel, but either way it was a hard fought top-five for our Caterpillar Chevrolet. "We had a top-10 Kalahari Resorts & Conventions Chevrolet for the entire weekend. Our lap averages showed that. Unfortunately we had overheating issues with trash and then we sustained an exhaust leak that made my driver's seat extremely hot during the race. It's a shame. It's like we never had the chance to show our muscle. We were just tending to issues that kept creeping up, instead of focusing on getting our car better to contend with the front-runners. "This team has a lot of fight in them. Regardless of what's thrown at us, we don't give up and I wasn't going to give up on my team, either. Our VELVEETA Shell and Cheese Chevy raced in the top 20 for most of the day and we did everything we could to find more speed in our car. Our balance wasn't all that bad, but we lacked some stability and we battled that all weekend. Our pit crew stepped up today and gained some spots for me on pit road and I appreciate them for that. We've got some work to do that's for sure, but I'm relieved we gained a few positions in the end to come out with a top-15 finish." - Ryan Newman

"It was good to see us run up in the top 10 and earn valuable stage points today in our Chevrolet Accessories car. We started off really loose in Turn 10 and lost some ground but once we had a chance to fine-tune it, we were pretty decent. We thought there might be a chance to gain spots at the end by just staying out because we were good on fuel, but it didn't work out in our favor. With about 20 to go, our tires were pretty much cooked so we just stayed the course and hoped for the best. I had a lot of fun road course racing. I just wish we could have had a better finish. This 31 team did a good job for me and I appreciate Chevrolet coming along for the ride." - Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman's Conservative Run Pays Off With Top-Five Finish at Daytona

"I don't want to say we got lucky, but we got lucky. We did not dominate tonight by any means. We rode around in the back for most of the race and it payed off for everybody but Austin. It was a little bit of luck. I think some guys were driving over their heads tonight and that is what causes accidents. We didn't have a single accident in practice so I guess it was a little bit of the emotion that got in everyone's way for the race there. For us, we had to play it smart. It was calculated and it was good enough for a top-five tonight." - Ryan Newman

But, we battled back pretty quickly and got the car handling fairly well toward the end of the first stage. Luke Lambert got me the track position I needed with a good pit strategy, but unfortunately our No. 31 Caterpillar Chevy struggled to keep up. A Series of Unfortunate Events Lead to 27th-Place Finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

"One of the positives from today is seeing the cars we raced around finish in the top 10. It reflects the speed we had in our Grainger Chevrolet. We struggled pretty much all weekend and the set up Luke and the engineering team came up with for today proved beneficial. At the end of the long runs, we were one of the fastest cars on the track. It was nice to earn stage points. It's too bad our pit strategy didn't pan out and contact with another car caused us to spin. Fortunately, we didn't hit anything. We needed a caution at the end to get us back into contention but the race stayed green. Today's finish was by no means a reflection of the quality of car we actually had." - Ryan Newman

"During the last couple of restarts there was a lot of adrenaline going through the gearbox, I guess. Just guys running over each other. We were close, even though we didn't have the best race car. We had a good long run car, but we were horrible on restarts and that is what we needed at the end. The overtimes were crazy. It's just the opposite of what you expect sometimes when you see a bunch of green-flag runs when we get the caution flags, they just breed more caution flags. Guys are a little out of control, but good run for the VELVEETA Shells & Cheese Chevrolet. I'm proud of the guys on the No. 31 team. We've made some big improvements. "Our Caterpillar Chevrolet was loose in Turn 1 and tight in Turn 3 for most of the race. We had some pit strategy scenarios and we chose to go for the stage points in Stage 2 which was good for our team. But I found with our overall handling, our speed was in line with the six to seven cars in front of us and when you are all running equal, it's tough to pass. We definitely have improved our race package from when we raced here in the spring. With that said, we adapted our strategy and Luke said we were a lap to the good on fuel. Saving here is pretty hard to do but we felt confident we were going to make it. I ran out with three laps to go. We're scratching our heads right now trying to figure out where we came up short. The guys were going back to the garage to measure everything. "We definitely didn't have the best race car at the beginning of the race and had to work on it during our pit stops through Stage 1 and 2. Luke (Lambert, crew chief) put together a really great strategy by staying out late and hoping for a caution during the final stage. "What a good run for our Caterpillar Chevrolet tonight. On the last lap, we finished in the highest spot we had been running the whole race. Early in the race, I sped on pit road. Unfortunately that put us in the back, which was then followed by a slow pit stop. Other than that, we had a great long-run car. We struggled on the short runs, but we just continued to fight, and the guys did a good job. It wasn't easy. We're not where we need to be, but we've got a chance (at the championship). We'll continue to work at it, get our cars better, and get our pit stops better, I have to improve, by qualifying better. It takes everything. Finishing third and having four top-10 finishes in the last five races has been a good streak for us, but you've got to win. "Today was a good kind of crazy, but that's the nature of speedway racing. I'm proud of the guys on this Caterpillar Chevrolet, and everyone who is a part of RCR and ECR, for accomplishing what we did. We tried to play it smart and in the end we were close, but not close enough. I got double-teamed with the No. 2 and the No. 22 (Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano). That was the difference. We held them off longer than I expected. I couldn't tell how much nose damage I had and I hadn't led all day, so I didn't know what to expect. I saw the No. 2 (Brad Keselowski) car in the mirror backing up and then he lost his draft and then he backed up again and he caught the No. 22 (Joey Logano). That was all it took for him to get a good run. I would have maybe played it differently and backed up to them in hindsight, but I don't think it would have made a difference. They were double-teaming me. Overall, it was still a good race to finish second with the Caterpillar Chevrolet." - Ryan Newman
